How to Keep the Members of Your HOA Safe on Memorial Day
Keeping Your HOA Safe on Memorial Day

Many people are excited to get outside and spend time with neighbors, friends, and family for Memorial Day. Throwing a party to celebrate Memorial Day is a great way to bring your residents together and create a greater sense of community with minimal effort.

Neighborhoods truly thrive on a sense of unity and friendship. Throwing a fun and safe party this Memorial Day weekend for those who call your community home, is well worth the little extra time and effort. However, keep these tips in mind to allow for safe and uninterrupted festivities.

Grilling and Fire Pits

Never use grills indoors. It is common for some people to avoid HOA rules at townhouse and condo communities, believing that a small grill might be okay to use indoors. Along with being a fire hazard, there is a carbon monoxide build-up, which can be lethal.

Keep grills and pits at least 10 feet away from housing and far from decorations or outdoor furnishings. Clean grills and pits well and brush off any debris. Check for gas leaks before igniting. Always keep gas grills open when igniting them. A closed grill traps the gas that could cause a fireball to explode in your face when you light it. Keep a spray bottle of water and a fire extinguisher within reach when operating your grill.

Pools

If there is pool access, be sure to review pool safety and behavior expectations with children. Never leave children unattended. If you designate a responsible person to be in charge for the time you wish to relax; state where you are going, how long you will be away, and leave your number to reach you in the event of an emergency.

There should be at least three designated adults to remain sober and be able to respond to an unfortunate event. It is best to have one strong swimmer that could save someone who is drowning, one to keep the area free of bystanders, and another to call 911.

Pets

It is important that pet are safe and comfortable as well. Make sure plenty of fresh water is easily accessible for your pets and that there is a way for them to relieve themselves.

Southern California is known to provide a Memorial Day weekend full of sunshine. Take note of the temperate throughout the day and always check in with your pets as often as you can.
