According to BPJ, the National Fire Protection Agency reports an estimated 20,090 annual commercial fires which occur in mercantile properties, office buildings, and high rises. Because of this, it’s important to be proactive in fire prevention to keep your building secure and your employees safe. Especially as October is national fire safety month, consider the following fire prevention tips for your commercial property. In addition, secure your property with an Los Angeles Commercial Umbrella Insurance policy.
First and foremost, check the perimeter of the building for flammable debris or liquids that could start a fire. Further, ensure that the landscaping surrounding the building is well maintained. Weeds burn immediately, so have them regularly pulled and keep the shrubs clean.
The next step is examining the interior of the building. BPJ states to look for flammable debris or liquids – It’s important to store combustibles like paper, cloth, rubber, and building materials in appropriate containers so they don’t fuel the fire. Flammable liquids should also be stored in sealed containers. Any cleaning materials, chemicals, and flammables should be securely stored and away from the public. Be sure these materials are kept in a locked container or in a separate storage area that is not easily accessed.
Next, have the electrical equipment examined. All machines, extension cords, and motorized equipment needs to be maintained and used properly to prevent any potential for fires.
Lastly, acquire the right type of fire extinguisher for your commercial property. They are as follows, according to the article:
- Class “A” – Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, cloth, rubber, etc.)
- Class “B” – Flammable liquids (fuel oil, gasoline, cooking grease, solvents, etc.)
- Class “C” – Energized electrical equipment (wiring, fuse box, electrical motors, etc.)
- Class “D” – Combustible metals (magnesium, sodium, zirconium, etc.)
Have smoke detectors and extinguishers checked at least twice per year to ensure they are functioning properly!
