Avoiding the shock
It’s fair to say that COVID-19 took the world by storm, an unexpected shock that shifted economies and the way we approach everything (and all that we’ve taken for granted). And there we were thinking that the biggest news story would have been the wildfires in Australia…
We’ve put together a mini-series of blogs and a video to identify things that your HOA can do to be prepared for a disaster (or pandemic). Because let’s face it, we never know when it might happen, but we gotta be ready, right?
Essentials
Always make sure you set aside enough cash to pay vendors and store essentials like:
- ice & water
- sturdy shoes and gloves
- duct tape
- gas containers and blue tarp.
You should develop good relationships with emergency services. You should also include a list of emergency shelters, as well as pet-friendly shelters, should there be a need for them.
Onsite storage
If at all possible, you could stock a utility trailer full of additional items like
– first aid kits,
– ladders,
– ropes,
– hammers,
– flashlights,
– extension kits
Purchase a set of walkie-talkies, great if all other communication devices are unusable. Alongside threats like fires and flooding you should also consider animal droppings, bat or bee infestation, mosquitos and termites as well as wild animals; that may become an issue.
Remember to review your emergency procedures and have all documentation stored in a central location, such as copies of insurance certification and details.
You should as a rule be reviewing your emergency procedures regularly, so every year. However, pandemics such as COVID-19 remind us of just how quickly things can change and new considerations might be required.
